Description:
SOY PROTEIN PROTECTS AGAINST HEART DISEASE
--Analysis of a number of research studies showed soy protein lowers total and LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, while not decreasing HDL (good) cholesterol in individuals with high levels of cholesterol. Each drop of 10% to 15% in the LDL level decreases the risk of a heart attack by 20% to 25%.

The evidence of cardiovascular benefits is strong enough that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized nutritional labels claiming that, at least 25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a low-fat diet, can lower blood cholesterol levels in people who have high cholesterol. Soy protein also tends to inhibit LDL (cholesterol) oxidation resulting in decreasing the onset of clogged arteries.

SOY PROTEIN AND MENOPAUSE--SOY contains several isoflavones. Two of these, genistein and daidzein are the most potent phytoestrogens known. Phytoestrogens are similar to the female hormone estrogen. These substances act as an estrogen regulator. Because phytoestrogens and estrogens seek to occupy the same receptor sites they act as an estrogen limiter or an estrogen supplement. This may explain why cultures which consume a diet high in soy report few menopausal symptoms.

SOY PROTEIN AND OSTEOPOROSIS--The isolfavones found in soy may aid in maintaining bone mineral density. Consumption of soy protein by post menopausal women could result in beneficial increases in bone mineral density in the spine.

SOY PROTEIN AND ENDOMETRIOIS--The phytoestrogens in soy may decrease the symptoms of endometriosis in much the same way they affect menopause symptoms.

SOY PROTEIN AND PROSTATE--Soy protein may also guard against enlargement of the prostate gland. Thus, reducing urination difficulties associated with aging.
